As you might know by now, you change a lot during the 4 phases of your cycle.
Your thoughts, your emotions, your physical body, and even the way you digest food.
I’d like to tell you a little more about how hormones affect your gut…
Over the 4 phases of your cycle, your hunger levels, metabolism & digestion change!
Here’s how it works:
MENSTRUATION: (shedding of uterine lining)
- starting to feel less hungry
- metabolism slows down
- digestion picks up (period poops anyone??)
FOLLICULAR: (egg growth)
- less hungry
- metabolism slows down even more as estrogen rises
- digestion is working well
OVULATION: (release of the egg)
- least hungry
- metabolism slowest
- digestion working well
LUTEAL: (maintaining of egg in uterine wall, hormones hope it got fertilized)
- more hungry (you need 200-300 more calories in this phase!)
- metabolism speeds up
- digestion slows down
I see a lot of women feeling guilty about eating more during before her period,
AND THIS IS COMPLETELY NATURAL!
Since your hormones, in a way, think you’re pregnant during the Luteal phase, you need to sustain energy and “feed the potential baby” with 200-300 more calories.
If you deprive yourself of nutrients during the Luteal phase, you might feel hangry (hungry+angry), irritable, fatigued, and really making decisions from a stressed state of being since you’re putting yourself in survival mode (fight/flight!)
Natural food is thy medicine.

Remember, your hormones affect your brain, metabolism, immune system, gut, sexual reproductive system & stress response system!
