It’s time to take control over your emotions

First, you need to understand that your hormones are your emotions.

For example, when you feel stressed, the hormone Cortisol is rushing through your body.

When you feel love, Oxytocin is rushing through your body.

When you feel depressed, Serotonin is suppressed.

Motivation is correlated to dopamine as well as thinking in the future.

Estrogen is a mood booster and Progesterone has a sedating effect.

Mood swings are often a big issue in women, especially as a part of PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) during the 10-14 days before menstruation starts.

There are 4 phases in the woman’s reproductive cycle and in each of the phases you’ll have emotional patterns.

  1. Menstruation: lasts ~3-6 days, also known as your inner Winter
  2. Follicular: lasts ~10 days, between your period & ovulation where Estrogen rises, also known as your inner Spring
  3. Ovulation: lasts 1 day, usually around the middle of your cycle when Estrogen peaks then falls, also known as your inner Summer
  4. Luteal: lasts ~10-14 days, Progesterone rises & Estrogen starts to rise again after the post-Ovulation dip, then both hormones drop at the end of this phase also known as your inner Autumn

Here are a few common emotional patterns during the phases and tips on how to balance them.

Be aware of the “negative” emotions, they tend to come from a place of trauma from your past experiences.

Also, your hormones are just trying to make you survive & reproduce.

So just observe them as they are.

MENSTRUATION EMOTIONS:

  • hormones are lowest so energy is lowest
  • vulnerable
  • sensitive
  • low confidence
  • creative

How to balance emotions during Menstruation:

  • be present
  • look in the mirror and speak words of affirmation to yourself
  • don’t take things personally
  • allow yourself to rest
  • create art
  • meditate

FOLLICULAR EMOTIONS:

  • fearful
  • adventurous
  • spontaneous
  • pleasurable
  • sociable
  • wants to be elsewhere

How to balance emotions during Follicular:

  • go on an adventure
  • learn a new skill
  • hang out with your friends or meet new people
  • trust that everything will happen when it needs to
  • try a new restaurant & new food
  • meditate

OVULATION EMOTIONS:

  • confident
  • generous
  • attention-seeking

How to balance emotions during Ovulation:

  • show yourself
  • present your work
  • host a gathering
  • meditate

LUTEAL EMOTIONS:

  • jealous
  • shame
  • guilt
  • greedy
  • introverted

How to balance emotions during Luteal:

  • write a gratitude list
  • spend time alone
  • listen to your intuition
  • meditate

Being aware of these emotions is the first step of accepting & observing them.

We do NOT want to suppress these emotions as they will then manifest in your body as a form of disease.

For example, anger is stored in the liver and can develop liver failure.

(Someone who drinks a lot of alcohol tends to be angry)

Your kidneys hold fear and you could develop a urinary tract infection.

(Imagine scaring a kid and they pee their pants)

As you might have noticed, I put “meditate” as a tip for balancing your emotions in each of the phases.

Meditation, or at least mindful breathing, is a science-backed & proven way to reduce stress, be present & have a better quality of life.
